Starting Define Jewelry: A Journey of Healing, Empowerment, and Advocacy

Hi, I’m Jillian, the founder of Define Jewelry, and I want to share the deeply personal story behind why I started this business. It’s more than just creating beautiful pieces—it’s about raising awareness, supporting others, and making a real difference.

My story began when I was 18 years old, when I was diagnosed with anorexia. At that age, I thought I had everything under control, but quickly realized that my relationship with food had become unhealthy and dangerous. It wasn’t just about food; it was about control, self-worth, and a struggle with my own identity. I have spent years battling this disease, going through multiple treatment facilities, including a residential program, where I learned some of the hardest yet most important lessons of my life. I had to not only heal my body but also my mind. I had to rebuild my sense of self—something I had lost along the way.

Eating disorders are so much more than a fixation on food. They are complex mental health conditions that take a toll on every part of a person’s life—emotionally, physically, and psychologically. And it’s more common than we think. According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), 9% of the U.S. population will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives. That's millions of people, including men and women of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life. Despite how widespread it is, the stigma surrounding eating disorders often prevents people from seeking help.

I understand this first-hand. For years, I felt isolated in my struggle. I was afraid to speak up, afraid to admit that I needed help. It wasn’t until I took the courageous step of entering treatment that I began my journey to recovery. Recovery is possible, but it’s a long and challenging road that takes support, patience, and compassion. That’s why, today, I’m so passionate about breaking the silence around eating disorders and raising awareness in any way I can.

When I decided to start Define Jewelry, I wanted it to be about more than just beautiful pieces—it had to have a purpose. I wanted to create something that would inspire confidence in others, something that would empower people to embrace their story and celebrate their unique journey. Every piece of jewelry we create is designed with the belief that our individuality is something to be proud of. No matter where you are in your life or what you’ve been through, your story is powerful, and it deserves to be celebrated.

But the mission of Define Jewelry goes beyond jewelry. A percentage of all proceeds from each sale will go to an eating disorder clinic. These clinics help those who are struggling with eating disorders find the resources, support, and treatment they need to recover. It also funds research to better understand eating disorders and improve treatments for those affected.

I want to use Define Jewelry as a platform to amplify the voices of those who are struggling in silence. So many people feel like they are fighting alone, but I’m here to remind you that you’re not. Your story matters. You matter.

As someone who has been through the depths of an eating disorder, I know how vital it is to have access to care and support when you're in need. The funds raised through Define Jewelry will go directly toward helping people get that care—whether it’s providing access to treatment, supporting research, or raising awareness so others can recognize the signs and seek help sooner.

Eating disorders are real, and they affect millions of people, but recovery is possible. I hope that through Define Jewelry, I can offer a small but meaningful way to make a difference in the lives of those who need it most. Every piece you purchase supports not only your own journey of self-love and confidence but also the journey of someone else who is working hard to recover.

Thank you for supporting Define Jewelry and being a part of this mission. Let’s continue to break the stigma, raise awareness, and create a world where no one has to suffer in silence. Together, we can make a lasting impact and help those struggling with eating disorders find the hope and care they need to heal.

If you or someone you know is struggling with an eating disorder, please reach out to a professional for support. You don’t have to face it alone.
